It’s the start of the New Year and we all have good intentions of having a great 2017. Some of us made resolutions and are still trying to keep them 4 days in, while others didn’t even bother. I hear my friends, family, and clients all talk about losing weight, getting a handle on their finances, and getting their clutter organized. What if there’s one resolution that’s far more powerful that can truly change your life for the better? Would you want to know more?
One of the most powerful forces in our lives is the spoken word, and we often use it against ourselves without even realizing we’re doing it. What I have seen firsthand in my own life is that I create my story and can either wallow or revel in it. When I experienced a significant loss in our family, I allowed that tragedy to become my story. It’s what I told others about when they first met me, and what I told myself to justify my choices and lack of action. In the initial aftermath, I understand it is a processing period of emotions and navigating to a new sense of normal. There is no set period of “getting over it” but hindsight shows me that I allowed that moment to become my theme. I allowed it to trap me into a very negative cycle and proclaim #1 victim status.
I have seen I am not alone in this mentality. Every hat I have ever worn, from my retail and restaurant days to my education and coaching careers, there have been encounters with those stuck in their stories. They have given me all of the reasons they can’t pay full price, can’t perform their duties, can’t fulfill their obligations, and why I need to give them special treatment. They sit and wallow in their stories. They have had their own tragedies great and small that now define their lives. They have told these stories over and over that they don’t even realize they’re stuck in a cycle. I know I’m not alone in talking to someone who has repeated their story no less than three times in a very short conversation!
As a coach, I also watch some of my clients go through these motions. I am thankful that in my coaching hat I get to help raise their awareness level, and give them tools to move forward. But the biggest tool of all is allowing yourself to write a new story! YOU HAVE THE POWER so why not create your story to let you live a life you will love?!? Take a quiet moment and acknowledge your old story. Thank it for serving you during that season of your life, and let it go. Literally, take a pen and start writing a new story for yourself. You can write it like one of those Christmas newsletters we get from friends and family on the update of all they’ve done this past year. Write 6-10 achievements, adventures, or goals and write them as though they’ve already happened! Whatever it is that’s been missing in your life, write it in! After you’re done, post it somewhere you will see it on a daily basis. You will be amazed at how your life will start to shift to make this new story come true!
Now that you know, it’s time to take action! What’s going to be your story for 2017?!?
